Be a good neighbour. Be a Street Mate.
In a flood or bushfire, some of the people nearest to you — elderly neighbours, or neighbours living with disability — are the most likely to be missed and the least likely to ask for help. Street Mate is how the rest of us look out for them.
How you can help
Six small things that make the biggest difference
- Make sure a neighbour has a plan and is prepared for a natural disaster or emergency.
- In an emergency, help them activate their plan and evacuate quickly.
- Check whether they need transport or any extra support to get out.
- Check they're being evacuated in plenty of time — not left until it's urgent.
- Stay in touch with them after an evacuation, not just during it.
- Make sure they have what they need until they can go home.
